My Ode to Oscar de la Renta: Style is about being yourself
Posted on October 29, 2014
Since hearing of the passing of Oscar de la Renta (I've barely gotten over Alexander McQueen's passing four years ago) I've literally been mourning the loss of his irreplaceable footprint on the fashion world. Below are some of my favorite Oscar de la Renta looks. He said it best, "Fashion is about dressing according to what's fashionable. Style is more about being yourself."
The classic little black dress with a twist. No one did it better.
He used bold colors with such confidence, "I like light, color, luminosity. I like things full of color and vibrant."
This is one of my favorite red-carpet looks of all time - and not just because it's Oscar de la Renta - the color, the taffeta, the silhouette - it's immaculate!
Oscar's signature drape. "I am not interested in shock tactics. I just want to make beautiful clothes." - Oscar
Oscar has dressed every first lady from Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama. "We will always remember him as the man who made women look and feel beautiful." - Former First Lady Laura Bush
The iconic Oscar de la Renta dress - miles of tulle, ruffles and pleats and ooozing with femininity
Who can forget his bridal gowns? I always dreamt of being wed in an Oscar de la Renta Gown and remember cutting them out of bridal mags and taping them into my wedding scrapbook declaring - "this is the dress I want!"
Oscar de la Renta with Amal Alamuddin during her private wedding dress fitting, his last major design she wore for her late September wedding to George Clooney in Venice.
One of his last public appearances and his last runway during Mercedes Benz fashion week Spring 2015 in New York on September 9, 2014.
Oscar died of cancer at the age of 82 on October 20, 2014 at home surrounded by friends and family. Rest in peace - the fashion world is a little less rosy without you.
