Every year it feels like hijabi model Halima Aden’s noor (light) is growing brighter and brighter!
The Kenyan-born Somali refugee, who two years ago made a splash as the first hijabi contestant in the Miss Minnesota pageant and then last year was signed by IMG Models (only the biggest modeling agency in the world) and walked in Kanye West’s Yeezy “Season 5” show at NYFW (rocking her hijab and a fur coat), just had made her debut in the pages of Elle magazine wearing Haute Hijab!
It’s hard to keep up with all the fabulous things Halima is doing as she continues to pave her path through the modeling and fashion world. She’s been featured in numerous magazines and news outlets, including Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Vogue and even gave her own TED talk.
But, the Elle photo spread and accompanying conversation with Muslim Girl’s Amani Al Khatatbeh is truly special, not just because she is rocking her HH in many of the featured photos, but because she has been recognized as a “Change Agent” by the magazine, declared to be on the “forefront of a new focus on representation.”
Says Halima in the photo spread, “... now I’m finally at a place where I’m seeing my work as a career, versus, “Wow, this kind of fell into my lap—what do I do?” I’m not saying everything’s guaranteed, but I’m taking it more seriously. I don’t speak for every Muslim girl—I can only speak for myself—but I want to be a good role model. If I can encourage girls to stay true to themselves and not be scared to try something new, then I’ve done a good job.”
Modest fashion, which is experiencing a huge moment right now, is not limited to any particular race, ethnicity or religion, Halima says. “It’s a global thing!” We couldn’t agree more!
