Last week I attended Anniesa Hasibuan's F/W 2017 NYFW show for the second year and one thing is certain: hijab is here to SLAY.
As you may remember, last year, Anniesa made history as the first designer to show all her models in full hijab on n NYFW mainstage.
This year, Anniesa took it one step further and casted all-immigrant or children of immigrant models for her Fall/Winter 2017 show in order to celebrate the diversity of America. Anniesa's intent was to make a statement against the current administration's stance on immigration, referring of course to the failed "Muslim ban."
The theme of her new collection is, Drama - and that, she brought. A suspenseful soundtrack accompanied high-drama silhouettes including this stunning cape and ball skirt as well as dramatic monochromatic hues of black, white and glossy metallics.
Fabrics were anything but ordinary, Anniesa incorporated sequins, satin, velvet, jacquard, elaborate beading and tulle into her dramatic designs.
“Drama is about the character of women amidst the challenges of life. The sadness, the horrible situations, and the complicated life she has. But at the end of the day, she always has the strength to rise,” stated Anniesa.
Sitting there in the front row, I felt just as excited as last year, except this time, instead of the unmistakable feeling I had just witnessed history - I looked around at another majority non-Muslim crowd and thought, "Yes. Muslim woman fit right in and belong at NYFW."
Of course, I was excited to see all the models donning gorgeous satin square scarves ;) One-time for all my square scarf girls!
On wearing hijab down the runway, one model commented, "I feel empowered!"
Anniesa wants to show the world that wearing hijab does not prevent a woman from being herself. “As you can see by my collection, wearing hijab means you can still be part of the latest fashion and can still be yourself.”
Thank you Anniesa, for showing the world that hijab does not prevent Muslim women from being beautiful, and that we are an integral, thriving and active part of this society. Needed this now more than ever. (All photos courtesy of Getty images)
