A Hijabi's Guide on How to Work Colored Jeans and Pants

Sumayyah asks Haute Hijab: I need advice on how (if it's possible) to wear colored skinny pants modestly, in that bold red or royal blue. I don't know how to do it with a long top without looking ridiculous.

As a hijabi, it's tough to pull off skinny jeans while maintaining modesty. Some will tell you to avoid them altogether. If you are intent on wearing skinny jeans (no jeggings!) wear a top that is at least knee-length. For many girls this will look frumpy, so you'll either need to be tall or wear heels to pull it off. You can always get in on the colored pants trend by wearing a wider leg version. This will give you more options in terms of tops.

When matching colored jeans or pants stick with colors within its family. If the jeans are a bold color, (like bold red or royal blue) stick to other bold or royal colors. Cobalt blue, orange and hot pink all make bold red pop. Bright yellow, orange and emerald green offset a royal blue pant beautifully. If your pants are pastel, stick to pastel or neutral colored tops to give your outfit balance.

Take a tip from fashionista SJP and her hot pink/red duo. Ali Landry flips the look with red on bottom.
Below is Melanie's take on pink pants.

Don't forget to play with prints and textures like Melanie's polka dot silk blouse! You can always offset colored jeans with some trendier pieces like polka dot tops, leopard cardigans or lace blazers! Of course, neutrals like black, white and off-white will work with any colored pant.

Here are two ways Melanie worked the same red pants. She's wearing the Cafe Capri pant by J.Crew - they're perfect because the fit is loose around the hips and thighs, giving you more options for tops.
