Step Into My Closet: Organizing Tips for the Girl on the Go
Posted on August 13, 2012
Welcome to my closet! We've received many inquiries regarding organization so to address them, we're taking you into my closet! Read on for some tips and idea's!
Once a year, assess the clothing you haven't worn that past year. Try it on and ask yourself, will it ever fit me again? Is it compatible with my body shape? Will it ever come back into style? Do I feel good in it? If the answer to any of those questions is no, then get rid of it by selling it or donating it. Don't clog up precious closet space with unwanted items.
The key to closet organization is accessibility. If it's not within reach, you will most likely forget about it. Always fold knits as hanging them will make them lose their shape. I also like to display my most used purses right where I can see them so I can get to them easily when rushing out the door.
Invest in the right type of hanger for the clothing you're hanging. Use padded hangers for delicate fabrics, plastic hangers for button-down shirts, and sturdy wood hangers for suit jackets as they help retain the shape of the items. Do not use wire hangers. Organize hanging clothes by type and color. Blouses, for example, can be sorted first by sleeve length and then by shade. By keeping like items together, options for a given outfit are clear at a glance.
If you like to keep your shoes inside shoe boxes, label them or tape photo's to the outside of the boxes to know exactly what's inside each box. Keep the shoes you wear most on display, otherwise you may forget what's in all those boxes!
When it comes to your jewelry, out of sight, out of mind. If you can't see it, you'll most likely forget you own it. Take your jewelry and accessories out of their boxes and put them on display so you can get to them when you need them!
When it comes to hijab organization, I like them hanging right where I can see them, rather than folded and stacked in a drawer. I use Real Simple's pant hanger to organize my hijabs. I have them organized by color, print and size! Click here for more hijab organization idea's!
I like to put the jewelry I wear most on this mirrored tray next to my perfume's and valuables. Not only is it easily accessible, it looks fab!
