As-salamualaikum,

My name is Essra Azim. Most people might recognize me from my blog, Valessie. I'm currently a senior at Michigan State University (Go Green!) majoring in psychology. I was born and raised in East Lansing, MI but my parents are originally Egyptian.

I started wearing hijab at a young age. My mother and older sister, being my biggest role models, influenced my decision to wear the hijab. Growing up, I went to an Islamic school, which made it much easier to wear the hijab because it was common to see. My parents reinforced the significance of hijab. Therefore, when the time came for me to put it on, I was confident it was the right thing to do. Although I've been a hijabi for a while now, I continue to learn so much about myself and hijab. A major reason why I love fashion is because the hijab taught me to embrace myself and others.

Fashion was always a hobby of mine until I truly understood its significance. I realized you could convey a message and change the way people see a generation simply by the way you dress. See, to me, fashion is not just about clothes, it's much more. It's the way you carry yourself, your manners, and your confidence. The reason I have high interest in fashion is because it has the potential to influence so many, if properly conducted. When I first launched Valessie, one piece of valuable advice given to me by Melanie was to constantly renew my intention. This is something I constantly do. I launched Valessie with the goal to empower and infuse confidence in women.

Being Haute Hijab’s 'It Girl' is truly a privilege. Working with someone as amazing and empowering as Melanie is a dream come true. I can’t wait to share ideas and inspire one another.
