When I watched Valentino's Fall 2013 runway I was utterly mesmerized. I was in my living room and my husband called me. I pretended I didn't hear. I couldn't look away from the TV, for fear of missing a look, a detail, a drape that left me in a trance. In the back of my mind I was thinking about a new dress we have in the works that could've easily been on this runway - and my excitement about it imploded. Watching that runway reminded me of why I've been so addicted to fashion all my life, despite many failed attempts to get away from it. His designs are breathtaking, timeless and utterly beautiful. We're absolutely wonder-struck.
That collar? Those cuffs? I'm in heaven...
A recent New York Times blog described Valentino as the new protagonist in the "covered-up" fashion movement taking flight right now.
"Revealing the body beautiful has become a fashion cliché. Even those yawn-inducing strapless dresses for the red carpet are designed for exposure — not to mention the side slits offering a show of leg, Angelina Jolie-style." We couldn't agree more.
"There is a sweet poetry in clothes that are womanly without being sexually provocative."
"The truth is that it takes a certain courage and conviction to try simple, covered-up clothes. Whereas baring it all looks increasingly like yesterday’s trend."
Baring it all really does seem like yesterday's trend. After being mesmerized by the beauty and elegance of these designs, the next designer whose looks came down the runway in tight revealing clothes felt vulgar, even for a Paris runway.
Put a hijab on it and call it a day.
Quite possibly my favorite piece of the entire line - reminds me of a look I used to rock in college, only it was a sweater and a black statement necklace. Sigh.
