Support Humanity: A Universal Project

Posted on March 07, 2012

Our newest blog post comes from guest blogger Aneerah Ali of Desi Muslimah Today. She writes about a very special cause, Support Humanity: A Universal Project.

These days when we look all over the world, we see so much suffering, grief and injustice. From the famine in Africa, to the poverty and government corruption of Southeast Asia, to the oppression by leaders against their own people in the Middle East; the world is watching the horrifying images coming out of Syria, the heart wrenching pictures of starving children and the brave protestors standing up against all odds. We are also witnessing amazing courage, patience and struggle on behalf of people everywhere. I am overwhelmed by the enormity of it all and I can’t thank Allah (S) enough for what he has blessed us with. The privileges, freedom and lifestyle we enjoy are such a luxury compared to what the majority of the world is facing. So what can we do? I hear so many people asking this question. There are so many energetic and passionate people, especially young people who have come up with different ways to help and raise awareness about what is going on throughout the world.

A group of young Muslim teenagers from Flint, Michigan came up with an idea that has spread all over the world.  Shereen Baig, Duha Bakleh, Zena Khorfan, and Zahera Farhan started “Support Humanity: A Universal Project.”  I had a chance to speak to them about how they came up with this project. They realized how much is going on in the world right now, but felt there wasn’t a youth voice raising awareness about the issues. The girls started a facebook event page for their project and encouraged people to post photo's of a message they would like to share with others around the world. It encourages others to find out more, share knowledge and get creative in supporting the struggles so many are facing. The pictures can be viewed below in a video they created.

The event page spread so rapidly that soon they were flooded with dozens of pictures of inspirational and supportive messages from people all over the world, from Atlanta to Australia. Shereen Baig shared what the girls are hoping to accomplish through this creative project.

“We hope after this project is done we raise awareness about this issue a lot of oppressed people are facing, and we want the oppressed to know we hear them. We have to make sure we send it out to different schools, organizations, communities, states, countries, make it viral via twitter, facebook, tumblr, etc. By doing this a lot of people will watch the video, and we will accomplish our goal. (It) fulfills what we have been trying to say: we are all one. When times like these come we are glad all of humanity is working together to help each other.”
